Iquitosː The city of Iquitos, capital of the Loreto Region, is located on the left bank of the Amazon River, 3,650 km (2,280 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean, and 1,900 km (1,160 miles) from the capital, Lima. Ethnically, the Loretano inhabitants of Iquitos (current population estimated to be in excess of 400,000) are principally descendents of the former communities of the Amazon rain forest.
There is no overland route to Iquitos; the nearest you can get by road from Lima is Pucallpa, a long way to the south, and Tarapoto, on the Huallaga River. In fact, access to Iquitos is generally via the rivers, principally the Amazon, or by air. The most popular means of transportation within the city is the motorcar or mototaxi, a motorized tricycle for passengers. There are about 6,000 of them. On the rivers, people use the traditional peque peque, pamacari boats and motor boats. Some large ferries are also available.
The weather in Iquitos is warm and humid. The temperature ranges from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius in June and July, and the highest is 36 degress Celsius between December and March. However, the weather is apt to change, as it is almost anywhere in the world. Basically, the weather is warm, usually hot, humid, and rainy throughout the year.
